What is Limestone

Softer than marble, limestone can make a room feel warmer or more inviting than a highly polished stone.

Limestone is often the preferred choice for interior and exterior flooring, wall cladding, bathroom tiles, paving, fireplaces, door surrounds, facades of buildings, stairs and a whole lot more. It is reputed for its premium quality, toughness and durability.

Limestone has a smooth granular surface typically formed in clear, warm, shallow marine waters where organisms capable of forming calcium carbonate shells and bones can easily extract their needed ingredients from ocean water.

Limestone contains at least 50% calcium carbonate in the form of calcite, which is sourced primarily from the shells and bones of marine organisms. It is common to find fossils of sea creatures as well as shells in limestone. Since honed limestone has a flat, matte finish these fossils often add interest and depth to the stone's finish.

Millions of years of heat and pressure cause a chemical reaction known as lithification, which hardens sediment containing fossilised marine organisms into limestone. In its pure state limestone is white but it may also be coloured by other materials. All limestone contains at least a small amount of other materials, these can be small particles of quartz, feldspar, clay minerals, pyrite or siderite.

The aesthetic appeal, ease of maintenance and health benefits of limestone make it the perfect flooring option for your home. From varying finishes to its long-lasting character, limestone can add a rustic, yet beautifully sleek look to your flooring.

Because limestone is porous with varying degrees of hardness, a sealant is always necessary for protection against stains and to help your limestone stay looking fresh.

Regular maintenance of limestone once sealed not only gives added protection, but also allows for the tiles to be easily cleaned with a broom or a neutral soap and water when necessary. That means when you come home from the beach with sandy towels, sandy feet or bags, you can just sweep the sand away.

Some Tips

Choose an experienced company with specialised equipment and expertise to correctly seal and maintain your limestone once installed.

It is important to keep your sealed limestone clean, wipe up spills quickly and clean periodically.

Professional cleaning will not only remove surface dirt but draws out dirt deep embedded within the pores of limestone.

Get in contact with a professional stone floor maintenance company with the equipment and knowledge to ensure you're valuable surfaces look just how you want them.
